Wynberg property for sale and to rent
Living in Wynberg
Wynberg is one of the oldest and most characterful parts of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs, and nowhere is that more visible than in Wynberg Upper’s Old Village — sometimes still called Chelsea Village — where the largest surviving collection of thatched Cape cottages in the city sits along lanes lined with artist studios and design shops. The whole precinct has been protected as an urban conservation area since 1981, and wandering it still feels like stepping into a different century.
Beyond the village, Wynberg has real everyday texture to it. Wynberg Park’s 22 hectares of lawns, duck ponds, and braai spots have been a local gathering place since 1902, Maynardville Park hosts open-air Shakespeare each summer, and the Royal Cape Golf Club — the oldest in South Africa — sits right in the neighbourhood. Chart Farm nursery is a favourite weekend stop for anyone happier browsing plants than shops.
Families have plenty to work with here too: Wynberg Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools (the latter one of the oldest schools in the country) and Springfield Convent are all close by, alongside good sports facilities including the Wynberg Aquatic Centre’s heated indoor pool. Homes range from centuries-old character cottages in the Upper village to more contemporary houses, townhouses, and apartments further out — enough variety that there’s a genuine fit here whether you’re buying, selling, or renting.
