Wynberg live music is getting a new home. Chelsea Live, a series of Saturday afternoon concerts in the garden of the Wynberg Club in Chelsea Village, opens on 14 November with the Rosie Bruce Band.
How Chelsea Live came about
The series is the idea of musician Ian Cohen, formerly of Bright Blue, and Derek Craig of Shoreline Songs, with support from Wynberg Club manager Guy Edmonds. Cohen told the Southern Mail he had walked past the club most days and, looking at its front garden, thought “now that would make a great live venue”.
The venue is outdoors, with a sound system, food and a bar. It is on Wolfe Street, opposite Maynardville Park.
The Wynberg live music line-up
- Saturday 14 November, 2.30pm: Rosie Bruce Band (opening show)
- Saturday 21 November: Robin Auld Band
- Saturday 28 November: Watershed
- Saturday 5 December: Wendy Oldfield
- Saturday 19 December: Masala
The organisers have also named Congo Cowboys, Arno Carstens, The Betsies and Madame Freak for the new year, and hope to add Sunday jazz sessions if the Saturday shows do well.
Tickets are expected on Quicket from early November, listed under “Chelsea Live”. Prices and start times for the later shows had not been announced when the article was published.
Why it matters for the neighbourhood
A regular weekend music venue within walking distance is a real plus for Chelsea Village and Upper Wynberg. It gives residents another reason to spend a Saturday afternoon close to home, and brings visitors to the village’s restaurants and shops.
Upper Wynberg is known for Chelsea Village’s Victorian cottages, Maynardville Park and its easy access to Constantia, Claremont and the M3. You can read more on our Wynberg area page.
The new venue was announced as reported by the Southern Mail.
