Living in Fish Hoek

Fish Hoek takes its name from the Dutch for “fish corner” — Visch Hoek — a nod to its origins as a fishing settlement, and the sea is still central to everything here. The long, sheltered beach is one of the safest swimming spots in Cape Town, gentle enough for families, and popular with windsurfers and Hobie-cat sailors when the wind picks up. Between July and November, Southern Right Whales come in close enough to watch from the shore.

The area’s history runs deeper than most — Peers Cave, just outside the village, is where the 12,000-year-old remains of “Fish Hoek Man” were discovered, one of the most significant early human archaeological sites in the region, and the Fish Hoek Valley Museum tells that story in more detail. The suburb itself was laid out in 1833 and still has an old-fashioned, seaside-village charm, with colourful bathing boxes on the beach and the scenic Jager Walk leading along the rocks toward Sunny Cove.

Fish Hoek also runs a well-known Shark Spotters programme, giving swimmers and surfers real peace of mind in the water. With quaint shops, cafés, good schools, and a close-knit community feel, plus easy access to Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek offers buyers, sellers, and tenants a genuine slice of old Cape Peninsula life by the sea.
